The Great Divide is Noah Kahan’s fourth studio album, released on the 24th of April 2026 and initially featuring 17 fresh tracks. This then gained 4 additional songs the following day when he released The Great Divide: The Last of the Bugs, as a deluxe album. The Great Divide explores themes of storytelling and maintains a sense of small-town intimacy, a defining concept in his previous album ‘Stick Season’. However, this album builds on these ideas, with distance becoming a clear point made across the record. This distance is expressed in multitudes but particularly through emotional, physical, and spiritual distances. This provides the album with a continued sense of growth in comparison to previous works, without abandoning honesty and folk nature, which allowed his earlier works to resonate so deeply. It explores relationships and friendships both current and former, all the while maintaining a nostalgic feeling for a place you can no longer go.
Alongside the theme of distance, The Great Divide incorporates themes of burnout, fracturing relationships, hopeful optimism, self-acceptance, and maturity. The Great Divide is the record of someone who has learned to manage their past selves and continue to persevere in the present.
DOORS ★★★★★
‘Doors’ is the second track on the album, and arguably the greatest track on the Great Divide. It is deeply impactful and captures the fleeting moments between leaving and staying. The vocals and instrumentals of this track start slow but gradually build into an explosion of emotion which is almost overwhelming, taking a shot right at the heart.
‘Doors’ is not just about the someone’s physical exit from a room, but also the many crossroads people stand at in life. Every day we make decisions to stay, or leave in every situation of our lives, and this song does well to reflect the harder of those decisions.
It uncovers the relationship between someone who tends to push those close away and someone who refuses to leave. It explores themes of self-sabotage and troubled pasts that affect the dynamics and behaviour within their bond.

PAID TIME OFF ★★★★☆
‘Paid Time Off’ is the fifth track on the Great Divide and begins with a much more melancholic tone. It explores burnout, and the subsequential guilt which comes with stepping away, experiencing how feelings can make rest seem undeserved or unnecessary. Despite the melancholic themes, this track transforms into an upbeat melody, especially compared to surrounding tracks.
‘Paid Time Off’ is a key song that establishes the tone of the album, and is a crucial part of the larger narrative. It grounds the record in understanding the everyday struggles which are worked through to become recognisable. And the idea that the joy can be found in these simple moments in life.
The lyrics explore the dynamic between two people who are so contrasting but so similar in many ways, and how this allows them to find harmony and peace within each other’s presence and company.

DASHBOARD ★★★★☆
‘Dashboard’ is the ninth track on the Great Divide, and demonstrates Noah Kahan’s reflection on his direction, stagnation and fear of immobility. The song is based on a metaphor which uses a dashboard as a symbol for a lack of control. The track steadily builds up, gaining momentum through the instrumental and becoming a ballad of unsaid feelings. Though somewhat more repetitive compared to other tracks, Dashboard is a vital song on the Great Divide and thrives on a fleeting atmosphere which lingers throughout.
The lyrics center around someone who always runs from their issues instead of facing them, and tells the story of how this always manages to catch up with them in the end. And though despite speaking of always becoming a better person, it doesn’t change what has been said or done in the past.
