This week, I had the honour of being able to sit in on the very first dress rehearsal for the upcoming major production of the hit Broadway musical Little Shop of Horrors. Despite this musical being done countless times across both film and theatre, WCC’s 2026 production maintains both the original story and concept, whilst also adding its own elements. The story follows the timid and shy Seymour Krelborn, who works at a flower shop on the brink of shutting down. However, all is changed when he discovers a strange, unusual plant that brings the shop much-needed attention. However, things turn sour when Seymour discovers that the plant feeds on one thing… blood.
Despite being their very first full run through, the show was anything but a rookie performance. Each member of the cast, orchestra and backstage crew showed great skill and ability in their respective fields. The music, both during the musical and in the background, was a pleasure to the ears throughout, a particular highlight being the incredible saxophone section that took centre stage many times. The lighting and sound were also well coordinated throughout, adding to both the visual and aural experience of the production.
From the moment the show started, I found myself immersed in the world of the show: the rundown and slightly dangerous Skid Row. This is partially attributed to the beautiful, intricate sets and props that were used, making the story come to life through the incredible spectacle of colour that brightened up the stage. The illusion was also maintained through the smooth and clean scene changes and prop introductions, but the main highlight was the captivating performance by each member of the incredible cast. Each actor was exceptional, with even the smaller roles shining spectacularly. Through their incredible singing and acting, many phenomenal moments were highly impressive and incredibly engaging.
What brings this production’s characters together, however, is the outstanding costumes that have been created. Every character has an outfit unique to their personality, and they each match perfectly. Whether it’s a leather jacket covered in sharp spikes, a pink leopard print dress, or shiny green pants, every aspect of the wardrobe was clearly carefully thought out. In conjunction with the outstanding casting, this made the characters believable and greatly engaging. A key highlight was the two key characters, Audrey and Seymour, who portrayed their tale beautifully, and harnessed my attention right from the opening number.
With plenty of moments that made me laugh, as well as the perfect ending to finish it off, this production was nothing but amazing from start to finish, and I am so excited to watch it once more (for real this time). I do not doubt that the cast, crew and staff will put on many more stunning performances, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with in the future.
