Tyler, The Creator. A name you’ve probably heard of. One of the most creative, unique, and revolutionary artists in the hip hop genre. And one more thing to add to the list, he is very consistent. He’s consistently released an album every 2 years with no exceptions since 2011 for over 13 years. That’s why it came as a shock to many to a video by Tyler titled “ST. CHROMA” going viral on YouTube and Instagram.
Many fans have made theories about this album, but the trailer intrigues more questions than answers to these theories. A lot of Tyler fans have theorised that Frank Ocean will be on this album after a 4-year hiatus since one of the 9 silhouettes following him looks exactly the same. That’s not just it, the album drop date overlaps with Frank’s birthday (28th October), even though it may just be a coincidence. Many fans also think there will be 9 features for the 9 people, and we have already heard WILLOW in his single Noid, even though all they sing are little uh’s and yeah’s here and there at the start.
My theory for the plot of this album; the trailer is very dark looking and sounding until the Daniel Caesar takes over the vocals and all of a sudden they lose their dark and eerie tone, and we hear Caesar say “Can you feel the light,” and the track gains a new dimension. Then, we see the shipping crate that all the people following masked Tyler entered explode and this dark and gloomy world all of a sudden becomes vibrant with colour. I think this track will explore a dark and gloomy world where Tyler has to restore light and make it better. I do not think it will be similar to anything Tyler’s done before; Noid doesn’t sound like any other Tyler song.
The word Chromakopia also has deeper meaning. Chrom, the first part of the word means colour, and kopia is most likely taken from utopia or dystopia. The final piece to the puzzle is the cover- it’s completely different to all of his other covers, and the colours are pretty much perfectly the inverse colours of IGOR. Another album is about a story of a man who is falling for someone, but they don’t want to completely commit to them so he must move on, ending with a bright conclusion in ARE WE STILL FRIENDS? I think the story will be nothing like any other of Tyler’s previous works and will be a great new concept album about a man turning a dystopia into a utopia, and may not be like anything we have ever seen before…
