Generation vs Generation has always been a thing, gen z making jokes about millennials, Gen Z making jokes about baby boomers and Gen Z making fun of Gen Alpha. While Gen Z has been busy making fun of different generations the one that Gen Z has mostly left alone is Gen X. This can be attributed to the fact that Gen X is, for most of us, our parents’ generation. We were raised by Gen X so there is this level of respect for them.
With the realise of a new album from Eminem many of Gen X have fled to tik tok to say the Gen Z are trying to cancel Eminem. Which I really am not sure where this came from at all. To be honest most of Gen Z likes Eminem but this brings us to the most iconic video that started the one sided beef, @im_siowei made a video rapping to the backing track of an Eminem song. “What– Gen Z trying to what, cancel Eminem honey that’s cute.” She then proceeds to rap to the music honestly this video makes me cringe so badly. Its being quoted by many of those who have seen the video and absorbed the absolute pure cringe that it is, often being commented on any videos mentioning Eminem and Gen Z.
I think there are a few things that are just completely wrong with this video, one being that more than just this person think Gen Z is 12 year olds when the youngest members of Gen Z is 14 and the oldest is 28 years old. I think that majority of Gen Z grew up with Eminem or family members that loved him and there really is no beef.
Eminem’s newest album ‘The death of slim shady’ came out last month and its actually really good, there are some amazing songs on there but on the flip side there were ones that are a little meh at times. I think that Eminem is talented, however he was trying hard to be unnecessarily controversial. Lines such as “Mom shaming, dad shaming, yeah fat shaming, man-splaining, blah cry-babies attack shady wah mad cause they can’t tame me.” and “Blind people and deaf people suck…” highlight this weird endeavour. There are two or three whole songs dedicated to being offensive and the most ionic line of all in this saga of albums is “trying to cancel me Gen Z me bruh”. Nobody is trying to cancel Eminem but 12 year olds on twitter than aren’t even Gen Z. This one line created so much beef that there is a whole filter on tik tok dedicated to getting all of Gen X to rise against Gen Z starting a war against there own children.
The weirdest thing about all of this is that Gen X are our parents, it just doesn’t make sense because all they have to do is ask their kids what they think of Eminem to see that these things aren’t true. To give my own example of my dad who loved Eminem and wanted me to listen to one of his new songs called somebody save me, which is actually a really good song, in which he really does touch on many different topics that are avoided by people at the same level of fame as him. I didn’t hesitate to listen and the song again is really good I’m not trying to cancel Eminem and no one else I know is trying to either. I honestly think this was all started so that people have something to be mad at.
