Just like its namesake, Grade of Origin Game II proved to be a monumental event in WCC sporting history. After the Year 12’s won the initial netball game, the pressure was on for the boys and girls participating in football. While the netball was girls only, the footy would be mixed, meaning that everyone from Year 11 or 12 could sign up. To Year 11’s disappointment, we would be wearing Red (a shade too close to Maroon in my opinion…), and the Year 12’s would wear Blue.
The tension was palpable on game day. Both teams had an impressive turnout, as the sidelines were littered with fans. A group of excited Year 11’s had even brought out placards for their teammates, demonstrating their dedication to the grade and its players.
An interesting comparison between the 2 teams was their size – while the Year 12’s had a tight team with only a few substitute players, the Year 11 team had enough players on that they switched every player off, meaning they only played half the game each. This allowed more students that signed up to participate, so congratulations to Mr Macourt and the Year 11 team for encouraging participation in the grade!
One iconic moment was when Year 11 had the ball and was pushing up to the try line, when the ball seemed to disappear, before a Year 12 sprinted through, running all the way through and scoring, which ended up sealing the victory at the end for Year 12, with the final score of 3 tries to 2.
A huge congratulation to both teams, and especially Year 12 for taking out the win. While it was a tough match, Year 12 came out on top, which sealed the series. However, Game 3 is fast approaching (Thursday 19th of September!), and the soccer match could go either way as the term wraps up. Only time will tell!
