Throughout all of high school, I would make cupcakes for my friends’ birthdays. It started with the simple vanilla cupcakes with store-bought icing and M&M’s. These were the sweet treats I made for my friends in the earlier years of high school. As time went by, my baking became more advanced, and by Year 10, I had created an apple-cinnamon crumble cupcake from scratch for my friend group’s Christmas celebration.
My cupcakes always receive praise for the rich flavours and the luscious texture. However, for me, it was never about the baking itself. It was about serving my friends and showing my appreciation for them through something I created. Baking became my way of celebrating special moments and expressing care for the people around me.
Then, during the winter holidays of Year 10, I came up with a random business name and designed a logo for what was, at the time, an imaginary bakery. It was a simple idea, a passing thought, a dream, if you will. I was bored and decided to be creative, never imagining that the idea would become anything more than that.
As time went on, I began to understand the meaning behind the compliments and positive reactions I received. People genuinely enjoyed what I made, and I started to realise that my baking could become something bigger than a hobby. What began as a simple idea slowly transformed into a goal.
Fast forward to today, and that imaginary business has become a reality. “A Sweet Society By Lizzie” now has a working website, active social media accounts, and I am preparing to begin taking orders during the first week of the holidays. Countless hours have gone into planning, designing, learning, and organising the launch, but every step has been worth it.
This journey has taught me that dreams do not have to be huge to be meaningful. Sometimes the greatest satisfaction comes not from building something enormous, but from taking a small idea and turning it into something real. When people hear the phrase “making your dreams come true”, they often imagine something life-changing or extraordinary. However, sometimes a dream can be as simple as turning a hobby into something real. My business may not be a large company, but it has allowed me to take something I love and turn it into an opportunity to serve others.
I wanted to share my story because there may be students who have their own ideas, passions, or goals, but are unsure whether they are worth pursuing. I was in the same situation, but what started as a few homemade cupcakes and a made-up business name has grown into something tangible through hard work, persistence, and a genuine passion for what I do.
As A Sweet Society By Lizzie prepares to launch, I am excited to continue sharing my passion with others and creating treats that bring people together for special moments.
If there is one thing I have learned, it is that no dream is too small to pursue. Sometimes the most rewarding achievements come from taking a simple idea and having the courage to see where it leads.
